One woman's conflicting emotions and the whims of fate prevent her from being faithful to the man she loves in this drama. In 1939, Jeanne (Emmanuelle Beart) marries Louis (Daniel Auteuil) shortly before he is called to duty during World War II. Jeanne does not deal well with loneliness, and she takes many lovers after Louis is declared Missing In Action. In 1944, Jeanne receives word that Louis is alive, incarcerated in a P.O.W. camp. When Louis is released and returns home, he learns of her scandalous behavior; he forgives her for her infidelities and offers to give her freedom, but Jeanne chooses to remain in the marriage. Several months later, Jeanne gives birth to twins; while Louis is not convinced that he's the father, he loyally accepts them as his own. Louis takes his wife and children to Berlin, where to his disappointment, Jeanne becomes smitten with Mathias (Gabriel Barylli), a successful businessman. Before long, Louis is once again sent into battle, this time in Indochina. Jeanne returns to France, and Mathias opts to go with her; both Louis and Mathias remain faithful to Jeanne, and when Louis is made a military attaché to Damascus, Mathias once again follows her. Nancy 1939. Jeanne épouse Louis. Elle a 20 ans et le même jour, sa soeur épouse le frère de Louis. C'est la guerre, Louis est prisonnier. Jeanne se laisse troubler par le compagnon de prison de Louis, qui rentre à Nancy. Elle s'installe avec lui, au grand scandale de la famille. Enfin Louis rentre, Jeanne et lui se retrouvent mais Jeanne est enceinte, ils partent à Berlin pour recommencer leur vie. Là-bas, vie brillante, joyeuse. Jeanne est de nouveau enceinte. C'est Mathias, le fils de leur propriétaire, qui l'emmène à la maternité. Mathias aime Jeanne. Il arrive à Nancy où Jeanne s'est repliée quand Louis est parti en Indochine. Malgré elle, Jeanne vit un amour passionné avec Mathias. Elle essaie même de partir avec lui, avec ses enfants, mais et elle est là au retour de Louis. Ils partent en Syrie, mais elle a appelé Mathias. Jeanne est "renvoyée" à Paris, Mathias la quitte en comprenant qu'elle ne quittera jamais vraiment Louis. Jeanne, Louis et les enfants sont à la plage, Jeanne y séduit les jeunes gens, Louis va repartir, en Algérie, cette fois ... Jeanne meurt étouffée doucement. Dans son sac, Louis trouve une coupure de journal relatant la mort de Mathias.
