More U.S. Navy A-4 Skyhawks (Colors & markings 18) By Bert Kinzey The diminutive A-4 Skyhawk has long been one of the favorites among aviation enthusiasts throughout the free world. There are several factors that have contributed to the "Scooter's" popularity, not the least of which is the attractive lines of its compact airframe. It has enjoyed high visibility because of its long service life in the U.S. Navy and US Marine Corps, its extensive use in the war in Vietnam, and the fact that it has been exported to many foreign nations. The A-4 has been produced in numerous variants of both the single and two-seat varieties, and has been used to perform many different roles and support functions in addition to being an attack aircraft. TA-4Fs and TA-4Js have long been the primary advanced jet trainer for both the Navy and Marines. Other Skyhawks have been used as electronic warfare aircraft, to evaluate weapons and flight systems, and as forward air controllers. But the role which has received the most publicity is that of playing the part of an adversary aircraft. A-4s have been used to simulate potential enemy aircraft against which pilots in the Navy and Marines could train.
