More U.S. Fighters Army - Air Force 1925 to 1980's By Lloyd S. Jones The fighter airplane, as we know it today, had its beginnings in the First World War, but it was not initially an American development. In fact, no American-designed fighters were actually used in the war because they were years behind European technology. At the time America entered the war, the only suitable planes available were British and French machines, many already proven in combat. When the United States did start building fighters, they were license-built versions of European designs. The first American-developed fighters began to appear in 1918, but even these new planes drew heavily on established European patterns. Gradually, American fighter development established a course of its own and distinctive new designs paralleled, if not led, world fighter technology. The first of these fighters carried rather complex designations denoting aircraft type, manufacturer, design sequence within the company, type of powerplant, etc. For example, the Packard-LePere LUSAC-11: thcML" represented its French designer, Capitain G. LePere; the "US" was for United States; "AC" for the Army Combat; and the number "11" indicated the eleventh design. This cumbersome method was replaced in September 1920, by one denoting aircraft type and the engine cooling system used on the airplane. In this case, the PW-9C was a Pursuit, Water-cooled, ninth PW type, third version (indicated by the "C").
