Labeling Run Thick In The Night, the fifth album from U.S Christmas, as space rock in the vein of Hawkwind would be doing the band a great injustice. This album isn’t as cut-and-dry as that, though the epic ‘70s jam-style opener “In The Night” fits the bill. The band has been around for a decade, but only now are they starting to gain some attention. Their last album, 2008’s Eat The Low Dogs, was their first big coming-out to the general metal world and Run Thick In The Night continues where Eat The Low Dogs ended, but with greater emphasis on ambient and drone mechanics.

Every instrument has its purpose in shaping the thirteen tracks, each one contributing to the end result. At least half-a-dozen musicians make up U.S Christmas, including two drummers and a violinist. Having all these components bouncing off each other is what makes the grandiose instrumental “Fonta Flora” and the far-reaching “Deep Green” so electric. Melody is everything to the band, and the balance between explosive riffs and peaceful sound compositions is an important part in keeping the album afloat.

This isn’t a blatant concept album, though themes appear to flow from song to song. Repeated lyrics and retooled melodies give the album a tight, complete feel. A handful of instrumentals and soft acoustic guitar/violin numbers only reaffirm this feeling. The gentleness of “Fire Is Sleeping” and “Devil’s Flower in Mother Winter” is an instant highlight, showing that the band works as well under short lengths as they do with eight-minute tracks.

An album like this has limited appeal due to its progressive nature and mandatory repeated listens. It takes a while to get immersed into the album, but once a listener does, there is no escaping the tranquility and starry haze that sinks in. Expensive headphones were created specifically for albums like this. Filler is at a minimum here, though the coda “Mirror Glass” would have been a better closer than the plodding “The Moon in Flesh and Bone.”

While this is their fifth album, Run Thick In The Night is really their second release that has been properly distributed and promoted. U.S Christmas has been gaining a cult following for years, and that following should get larger with this album. It is expansive and deep, so thickly layered that unheard nuances can still be picked up after a dozen listens. Though a track or two should have been cut out, the album is a top contender for sleeper hit of the year.
