With a name as refreshingly obscure as “ Two Door Cinema Club”, you would be left feeling a little disheartened if their music wasn’t as refreshing as their stage name. A fresh talent from the perhaps Bermuda Triangle of locations – Northern Ireland – the band is made up of 3 guys from a small seaside town and the strong stench of dolce isn’t the only reason they are a breath of fresh air. Tourist History was initially released at the beginning of the year, but with their newly achieved success, a re-packaged and re-arranged bumper version of the LP was released. Tourist History boasts a wonderful furore of talent, and a lively, jaunty pulse runs throughout most of the tracks. The first single which garnered a recent re-release, “ I Can Talk”, is a prime example of this, with the lead singer Alex Trimble spit-firing out the lyrics against the head-over-heels instruments.

“Now I can talk / No-one gets off / You know how I like to”

After this fire-cracker, the tempo is set. Most of the tracks consist of similar intense guitars over the raw vocals, and at times, the sound is almost authentic of a live set – see tracks “Come Back Home” and “Cigarettes In The Theatre” for this. One simple highlight is perhaps how these teenage lads seem to target a wider range of topics, instead of the typical love and heartbreak that so many do. At times, many of the lyrics seem to refer to nothing, but it all works nonetheless:

“To the basement people / to the basement / many surprises await you”

The strong Northern Irish accent also distinguishes what could otherwise be a generic group, and makes their sound rise above the rest.

The deluxe edition of Tourist History also boasts the addition of new song “ Kids”, another romp around the epileptic guitars, a bundle of remixes and a 60 minute documentary based around the making of the album: a fair package to warrant the purchase of the album again. “Kids” is a welcome addition, with the lyrics possibly holding something for the more mature audience aswell:

“What did I teach you that money didn’t know / They’re my kids you know / They’re my kids you know”

“Kids” along with “Undercover Martyn” and “I Can Talk” stand out as the most noticeable tracks, and for a taste of exactly what the band has to offer, check them out.

Two Door Cinema Club turn what could otherwise be a typical group into something much more, breathing an air of reinvention to an already explored formula. With the indie-pop sound making a bigger return, the future could garner some success for these local lads yet, and with the talent they showcase throughout Tourist History, it sounds well deserved.
