More Twelfth Night: A Guide to the Play By John R. Ford Grade 11 Up A thorough and detailed introduction to one of the most frequently studied and performed plays in the Shakespeare canon. The book includes discussions of the textual history of the play, its historical context and sources, and its dramatic structure and themes. The chapter on critical approaches to the play is especially good in that it presents a historical overview of the many different schools of Shakespeare criticism, including the views of modern critics who focus on the issues of gender, sexuality, and social class raised by the play. The concluding chapter, Twelfth Night in Performance, describes different productions over the centuries and how they have reflected and influenced contemporary critical interpretations. Because the critical discussions and sources cited are so scholarly and detailed, this volume would be most useful to teachers and to students in AP or college classes. Kathleen E.
