I recognize this feeling as an aspect of transition into the unknown. As one begins to experience the transformation of moving away from an old familiar stage of development to a new unfamiliar stage, the doubts and uncertainties arise. The old rules don’t work anymore. One thinks it would be easier, safer to revert to the former way of doing and seeing things and avoid the pain and discomfort of uncertainty. But that is no longer possible. New possibilities have arisen and one must move on. There was no turning back from Copernicus’ view of the solar system. There is no turning back from the perspective of health as expanding consciousness. I am encouraged by Skolimowski (1994), who experienced the process of unfolding knowledge as traumatic and reminded us that only the guardians of the status quo remain confident, in their refusal to recognize new insights.
