There's only one band in the world who could concoct that irresistible mix of fat back horns, multi-ethnic rhythms and pure funk - Oakland, California's own Tower Of Power. And on the group's third album, titled simply Tower Of Power, this 12-man lineup delivered some of their most memorable music, along with their biggest hits.Spotligting the distinctive vocals of Lenny Williams and five of the hottest horn players in the business - Lenny Pickett, Emilio Castillo, Stephen Kupka, Mic Gillette and Greg Adams - Tower Of Power features the back-to-back chart toppers "So Very Hard To Go," and "What Is Hip," along with such towering classics as "Soul Vaccination," "Get Yo' Feet Back On The Ground" and "Both Sorry Over Nothing.'"

The multi-talented, fully integrated Tower Of Power were formed in the late '60s as part of the burgeoning San Francisco music scene. Yet, while bands across the bay were stretching the psychedelic limits, Tower Of Power were busy exploring the rich musical heritage of their own backyard. Oakland's diverse racial mix was reflected in Tower Of Power's lineup which included keyboardist Chester Thompson, bassist Francis Rocco Prestia, percussionist Brent Bryars and drummer David Garibaldi.

The group released its first album, East Bay Grease (1970), on the independent San Francisco Records label and were subsequently signed to an exclusive contract with Warner Bros. Records, where they recorded Bump City the following year. The LP featured the band's first national hit, "You're Still A Young Man" with vocalist Rich Stevens, who was subsequently replaced by Lenny Williams for Tower Of Power.

Recorded and mixed by Jim Gaines (who would later find fame with Huey Lewis), Tower Of Power captures the propulsive, tightly meshed ensemble sound that broke down musical, racial and cultural barriers as it created a whole new kind of soul
