A recently issued 2fer with nice sound. Not the 2fer I would have liked to see, but it's the one we have. "For Once..." was the last of his LP's released in mono, but I have been unable to find even a single mono copy.

"Those of you who think of "For Once In My Life" as a Stevie Wonder song, reconsider. True, Wonder took it to 2 in 1968, but Tony Bennett's ballad version was a pop chart entry (his last) and an Easy Listening Top 10 more than a year earlier. On the accompanying album Bennett made his by-now usual selections of standards ("They Can't Take That Away From Me"), Broadway and Hollywood material, and choices from the catalogs of songwriter favorites such as Leslie Bricusse and Cy Coleman. He was a faithful friend and a dependable talent, but, while maintaining his usual standard, this album didn't feature any standout performances to lift it to higher grade. "

"Bennett, whose sales had nosedived in recent years, was coming under pressure from his record label to take a more contemporary approach. This album demonstrated that be was willing to bend, but not break. The title song, a hit earlier in the year for Sammy Davis, Jr., "What The World Needs Now Is Love" (in a ludicrous swing arrangement), and "Alfie" were current pop material, which Bennett covered gamely, but it was songs like the Gershwins' "They All Laughed" that he obviously felt more comfortable with. Bennett's real failure to deal with contemporary pop was most apparent on his version of Andre and Dory Previn's "Theme From Valley of the Dolls," on which he just sang his way through the hesitant, fragmented, uncertain lyric as though it was a dramatic ballad on the scale of "Who Can I Turn To."
