It's hard to put your finger on Tommy Emmanuel. Over the past two decades, the talented guitarist has been alternately categorized as both a jazz artist and a blues musician, and it's true that he brings heaping elements of both to his genre-busting sound. But as shown by the live left Stage, Emmanuel is equally adept at country, rock, and even classical-styled picking. A two-disc set made up primarily of Emmanuel's imaginative instrumentals, with a few vocals thrown in, and a small choice number of covers, left Stage is both a showcase for the guitarist's immense talents and a guitar-lover's delight. With guest Bob Littell adding his harmonica, Merle Haggard's "Workin' Man Blues" is transformed into a spry country blues romp, the Australian Emmanuel's vocals displaying a warm twang worthy of countryman Keith Urban. "Initiation" is an almost eleven-minute, prog-leaning, mind-blowing instrumental workout full of light, tone, and amazing percussive effects, all delivered on an acoustic guitar. The jazz-flavored "Ruby's Eyes" displays Emmanuel's control and nuance, while the album's (instrumental) medley of Beatles songs mixes pop whimsy with nimble-fingered fretwork. Bottom line: Tommy Emmanuel does more with a piece of wood and steel than just about any six-string wizard that you'll hear in any genre.
