They are launched amidst a fanfare of publicity, carry many people on an exciting voyage, and then sink without trace! Of course, that is not to say that every group or ship is doomed to extinction, like the legendary liner 'Titanic'. Indeed many enduring bands, from the Rolling Stones to Status Quo, have defied the elements and sailed happily around the world for thirty years, without ever hitting the icebergs of fate. What most bands hope to achieve is a safe passage and the life belt of a hit record to keep them afloat. The Seventies rock group Titanic certainly enjoyed many years of carefree cruising, once they'd hit the charts with their best known hit 'Sultana'. Titanic were a five piece rock band from Oslo, Norway. They got together in 1969 with a line up that included Kjell Asperud (percussion, vocals), Janny Loseth (guitar, vocals), John Lorck (drums) and Kenny Aas (organ and bass guitar). Later the band added another bass player and Aas was able to concentrate on organ. They were one of the first Norwegian bands to enjoy hit records in both England and Germany. Previously Scandinavian bands like the Hep Stars and Oola and the Janglers had appealed mainly to their own national audiences. However, Titanic recruited British born lead singer, Roy Robinson, who wrote most of their lyrics, which he sang in English and this helped to broaden their international appeal. Titanic made a great impression with their dynamic Santana influenced style. They made clever use of funky Hammond organ, wailing lead guitar solos and dynamic percussion, which ensured they were popular with dancers as well as listening audiences. This 1970 debut album gives a fine insight into their musical skills and attitude. Unlike many local bands of the day, Titanic made sure they used original material and avoided playing covers'. Intriguing tracks like 'Searchin', 'Love Is Love', 'Mary Jane' and 'Cry For A Beatle' were all written by the Norwegians, with assistance from Roy Robinson. They were one of the first Norwegian bands to enjoy hit records in both England and Germany. As a result of much hard work and practice, the new band became the Number One rock outfit in Norway and very soon word about them spread all over Europe. Their biggest hit 'Sultana' was Number 5 in the UK singles chart In September, 1971 and a big hit In France. It was also a Number 5 hit back home in Norway, where another Titanic album 'Sea Wolf' album got to Number 7 in the national chart. The band toured extensively and enjoyed their first big break when they played at the Cannes Film Festival in France. They had been invited to play at the gala screening of the 1969 'Woodstock' movie. The group also played at the nearby Aix-en-Provence festival. Such was the wildly enthusiastic response at both these gigs, that the band decided to settle in the South of France. This made a good base for further European tours, and besides the winters were rather warmer than in the chilly north. Meanwhile, Titanic's reputation had spread to Germany, where they enjoyed another disco hit with 'Santa Fe' where it got to Number 36. 'Santa Fe', Included as a bonus track on this CD, was Number 17 In Belgium and 23 In Holland. Another single 'Rain 2000' was also a substantial Euro hit. Thanks to their Impressive musicianship and developing International appeal, the band was signed to CBS records. Having just released 'Sea Wolf', Titanic was featured on a special 'sampler' album, a 3-LP set called 'The Music People' released on Columbia in the US and on the CBS label in the UK and Europe. This included top artists like Santana, Bob Dylan, Johnny Winter, The Byrds and Blood, Sweat & Tears. There were also tracks by lesser known bands, with the aim of giving new 'signings' much needed exposure. Titanic's contribution was 'Underblrd' taken from 'Sea Wolf'. It was hoped the band would now take off In the States, but although the group released several singles to complement further albums like 'Eagle Rock', they failed to score any more major chart hits. However, Titanic remained a top club and concert attraction and worked hard throughout the Seventies. They toured Africa and the Near East, where their danceable rhythms were much in demand. In 1973 Kenny Aas left the group, and thereafter Titanic's musical policy changed. It was the end of the organ dominated sound in favour of guitar riffing and solos. There were more personnel changes too, but the band could not ward off their ultimate demise at the end of the decade. Titanic had achieved much during their long voyage and in the process helped put Norway on the musical map, paving the way for many more successful rock bands from the land of mountains, fjords and sea wolves!
