National Academy of Sciences, "Time and Stratigraphy in the Evolution of Man (Symposium)"

ONE of the continuing demands of science is the proper blending of the new with the old. In any scientific field, growth is usually sporadic, occurring on different fronts at different times. Fresh discoveries and sophisticated tools lend enchantment to the new, and, as frontiers shift, traditional areas of science may be temporarily eclipsed. When a traditional scientific area fades from the limelight in this way, some may misinterpret this temporary decline of interest as a decline in importance. Actually, such declines are rare. More often, challenging problems remain, which some continue to study and others later rediscover.

New techniques and discoveries in the growing areas of a science may, however, contribute important keys to the solutions of persistent and fundamental problems. Integration of such new findings into the existing body of knowledge in a science requires evaluation of the new in the light of the old. Rarely in the history of science has a new body of knowledge in an established discipline or have new methods and tools entirely replaced the traditional. Moreover, in many fields, particularly in the historic aspects of the natural sciences, traditional principles of observation and analysis are essential both to the proper evaluation of new findings and to the sound growth of knowledge and understanding. Current enthusiasm for geophysics and geochemistry appears to have left some with the impression that taxonomy of fossils is a closed, if not completed, book, and that the new techniques of dating have made it possible to replace detailed field study of stratigraphic relationships with a hierarchy of numbers. Despite the existence of these views, few would deny the importance of obtaining an accurate geologic picture of a fossil locality or of carefully differentiating the taxonomic characteristics of fossil specimens. Similarly, correlation of the fossil and stratigraphic records of different localities, whether on land or in cores from beneath the sea, is recognized as essential to completing the evolutionary history. These activities are fundamental and traditional enough to merit periodic illustration and reiteration of their central position in the study of the earth itself and of the evolution of life upon it. The Symposium on Time and Stratigraphy in the Evolution of Man was held on October 16, 1965, to provide such a review.
