After some discussion of the use and function of imagery generally and in the Bible in particular, Nielsen turns to a careful study of the many passages in Isa. i-xxxix which make use of the tree as an image (principally i 29-31, ii 12-17, iv 2-6, v 1-7, vi 12-13, ix 7-20, x 16-19, x 33-xi 10, xiv 4-20, xxvii 2-6, xxxii 15-20, xxxvii 22-32). She shows particular interest in drawing out and distinguishing between the informative and the performative function of the language, and in the image's suitability for later reinterpretation. This latter aspect is normally traced not so much to new compositions (although examples of that are also found) as to how the same words will have been differently understood either in a new political setting or in a new literary context. Thus although Nielsen is relatively conservative over Isaianic authorship and finds evidence that the prophet had a message of salvation as well as judgement (the tree that is felled but sprouts again), she is also able to include many of the conclusions of more radical critics in terms of how the work of Isaiah was interpreted in later situations. Some aspects of Nielsen's analysis are speculative; at times, for instance, she relies unduly on a hypothetical reconstruction of various forms of a myth telling of a garden of God in Lebanon, while elsewhere there is perhaps an over-readiness to find ideas of kingship. In general, however, Nielsen reaches her conclusions with all due caution. This fresh approach to some of the familiar problems of Isaiah is most welcome.
