Thelonious Monk - The Complete Blue Note Recordings [4-CD BOX SET] (1994) Genre: Jazz

Amazon Reviewer:

Thelonious Monk did his best work with Blue Note and Riverside (as well as some great music during his brief stay at Prestige). His work at Riverside came when the music industry shifted focus from 78's to Lp's, so naturally one will find such great albums as "Monk's Music," "Brilliant Corners," "Alone In San Francisco," and "Thelonious Himself" on that label. With the Blue Note material, Monk's work was dispensed on 78's, the reigning format of the time. While this means his Blue Note CD's are collections rather than carefully shaped albums, they still have a flow and coherency thanks to Monk's distinct style in playing and composition. All of that music has been compiled here on one glorious box set. Monk made a name for himself as one of the most important composer's in jazz history, alongside Duke Ellington and Charles Mingus. However, the bulk of his work, and possibly the best of it, came during his years at Blue Note, and many of them are presented in definitive versions. There's a wealth of alternate takes, but unlike other box sets where such takes are of dubious value, they are invaluable, occasionally surpassing the released master takes. Occasionally, Monk's accompaniment doesn't gel perfectly with the music, but Monk is in top form all the way through, as well as legendary drummer, Art Blakey, who complimented Monk's music better than any other drummer. What makes this set even better is the inclusion of a long lost live performance by Monk's legendary quartet featuring John Coltrane. Despite having played numerous nights at places such as the Five Spot, the quartet rarely recorded, having cut only three sides in the studio (later released as part of a compilation called "Monk with John Coltane"). However, we are fortunate enough that Coltrane made a recording of one of these nights on a personal tape recorder, and four decades later, they were finally released to the public. Not surprisingly, the sound is low fidelity, having been recorded in the same sort of conditions as your typical bootleg, but the music is so great and historically important that it is virtually essential.

Amazon.com:

"From the 1947 sessions that lead off this set through to the 1958 live recordings at the Five Spot with John Coltrane, this box set chronicles the development of one of the most unique and creative American musicians. The first CD dates entirely from 1947, and on it we hear a Monk conversant in the bebop idiom, his distinct style emerging. By 1951 on the second CD we have a gorgeous version of "Ask Me Now," with all the delightful rhythmic hesitation that became one of his trademarks. "Reflections" on the third CD has Sonny Rollins caressing the melody in an almost languid tempo, followed by a classic version of "Misterioso," with J.J. Johnson and Horace Silver sharing the piano role. The Monk-Coltrane live cuts on the fourth CD are incandescent. All in all, a set that is both enlightening (with a number of alternate takes) in its scope and delightful in its sheer musicianship and creative spark." --Michael Monhart

CDUniverse.com:

For those fans and collectors who don't already own GENIUS OF MODERN MUSIC VOLUMES 1 & 2, MILT JACKSON, SONNY ROLLINS VOLUME 2, or DISCOVERY!, this 4-CD box offers a chronological compendium of Thelonious Monk's works as a leader and sideman for Blue Note. It features all the masters and alternate takes from his breakthrough 1947, '51 and '52 sessions; his memorable '48 and '57 collaborations with Milt Jackson and Sonny Rollins; and a remarkable home recording of a Five Spot set with Roy Haynes and the emerging tenor titan John Coltrane. The live Five Spot set captures Monk during one of his long residencies at the Lower East Side bar which served as home during his triumphant return to the NYC club scene. Coltrane plays with torrential intensity on "Trinkle Tinkle" and controlled grace on "In Walked Bud." On the latter, Monk's solo makes stunning use of space to create tension, ending with celestial two-handed chords, while "I Mean You" is a two-handed self- portrait in rhythm-n-ing. Monk's 1948 performances with vibraphonist Milt Jackson rank among the all-time greats in jazz. They never play the theme directly on "Evidence," but as a series of spooky, skeletal echoes in which the melody is the sum total of their rhythmic abstractions. The clash of intervals on his masterful blues "Misterioso" is even more ghostly, as Monk and Jackson play ping- pong with the melody, while Monk's secondary theme on "Epistrophy" emphasizes the percussive bell- like timbre of the vibes. The joyous "I Mean You" is Monk at his most song-like--singing, strumming and soaring over Shadow Wilson's supple Kansas City 4/4 pulse with the bluesy elan of Charlie Christian. And Monk's 1957 performances of "Reflections" with Sonny Rollins, Paul Chambers and Art Blakey point out the enormous influence the composer had over the tenor colossus in matters of time, tone, tempo and thematic development.

Personnel: Thelonious Monk (piano); Kenny "Pancho" Hagood (vocals); Danny Quebec West, Sahib Shihab, Lou Donaldson (alto saxophone); Sonny Rollins, Lucky Thompson, John Coltrane (tenor saxophone); Idrees Sulieman, George Taitt, Kenny Dorham (trumpet); J.J. Added to Monk’s original Blue Note sessions (1947-52) are the two tracks he cut with Sonny Rollins in ’56 and the recently discovered live ’58 Five Spot recording with John Coltrane. The Five Spot session has been speed corrected, and the early dates have been de-clicked. Sidemen include Art Blakey, Milt Jackson, Lou Donaldson, Lucky Thompson and Sahib Shihab.
