More The Wave Equation on a Curved Space-Time (Cambridge Monographs on Mathematical Physics) Preface In this book, a wave equation is a linear hyperbolic equation on a Lorentzian manifold, that is to say on a given space-time. The classical theory of linear hyperbolic second-order equations is largely the creation of Hadamard and M. Riesz. This book is an attempt to present it in modern language, by using the theory of distributions, and a little differential geometry. There is virtually no physics in the book, but it is hoped that an account of a basic aspect of the mathematics of wave propagation will be of interest to physicists. The classical theory is local, and constructive. These two features are linked, as the construction of fundamental solutions (Green's functions), on which it is based, requires certain geometrical elements that can only be defined locally.
