"Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also" - such is the inscription placed in a pillar in Warsaw's Holy Cross Church, which holds a reliquary with Chopin's heart. This verse aptly reflects the short life of the Polish musical genius. His thirty nine years (1810-1849) were filled with intense concert and compositional activity, as well as teaching, the promotion of music and social work. Indeed, this period seems to be too short when one considers the position which Chopin achieved in the repertoire of the most prestigious concert halls all over the world and in the consciousness of Poles. His music came to represent the quintessence of the Polish spirit and the most perfect expression of the patriotic ¡deas of the first half of the 19th Century. It was the source of consolation and comfort for Polish émigrés at a time when Poland was wiped off the political map of Europe.

The first CD of Chopin's most beautiful pieces opens with the Polonaise in A fíat major Op. 53, a work filled with conviction and expression. References to this national dance (explored by, among others, Jozef Elsner and Karol Kurpiriski), coupled with the style brillant, led to the creation of a kind of epic poem for the piano, characterized by the use of diverse compositional and expressive devices (evident particularly in the last, grand polonaises of Op. 44,53 and 61). The accuracy and strength of tone of Piotr Paleczny's playing under-iine the dance character of the piece, without losing the polonaise's characteristic rubato. Paleczny's masterful skills are surely matched by Kevin Kenner.

The second CD opens with five songs with piano accompaniment, ¡n the interpretation of such Polish stars as Teresa Zylis-Gara (Zyczenie / The Maiden's Wish Op. 74 No. 1, Gdzie lubi / What she likes Op. 74 No. 5), Adam Kruszewski (Hulanka / A Drinking Song Op. 74 No. 4) and Ewa Podles' (Sliczny chiopiec / The Handsome Lad Op. 74 No. 8, Piosnka litewska / A Lithuanian Song Op. 74 No. 16). Chopin's songs were model examples of the genre of the Romantic song. Many of them were settings of texts by prominent contemporary Polish poets, notably Adam Mickiewicz, Zygmunt Krasiríski, Bohdan Zaleski and Wincenty Pol. Itis worth stressing that the decisive majority of Chopin's works are for solo piano. The songs are almost the only musical form in his oeuvre in which the piano plays a subordinate role. When listening to these miniatures, however, one has the impression of a very close partnership between the voice and accompaniment. Both parts are treated with due attention, as the rightful elements of a composition which requires the equal commitment of both performers.
