More Micha Prestwich, "The Three Edwards: War and State in England" An excellent introduction to an eventful period of history., this spirited work analyzes the three Kings of very different qualities and reputations: the confident and masterful Edward I who conquered Wales; Edward II who was defeated by the Scots in battle and was humiliated and deposed; and Edward III whose reign saw great triumphs against the French, but also the ravages of plague. Michael Prestwich combines lively anecdotes and colorful assessments of each of these Kings' characters. The second edition of this highly acclaimed book updates the story throughout. A great deal of research on this period of history has been undertaken since 1980 when the first edition was published, a great deal of it by the author himself.
