The Witchcraft songs are the more enjoyable of the set, simply because they’re Witchcraft songs. Even those buried deep in the doom scene would hard-pressed to find a band channeling a more authentic 70’s doom vibe then this humble Swedish outfit. Who cares if it’s “retro” or whatever, Sabbath and Pentagram aren’t writing songs like this anymore. All three songs are excellent representations of the band’s style and feature an old-fashioned, stripped-down demo-like production to accent the already ancient-sounding riffs and the fuzzy warmth of the band’s old-school doominess. “You Bury Your Head” is the most triumphant sounding (that intro riff!) before romping through an excellent historical exercise of Sabbathian grandeur. “Queen of Bees” is a heavier enterprise and just as unabashedly rooted in traditional Black Sabbath-isms. “Shameless rip-off!” you cry, forgetting that Black Sabbath rip-offs are almost always the most honestly entertaining rip-offs in all of metaldom, as Sleep fans will be quick to remind you. The rhythm section is incredibly tight on all of these tracks, though I noticed it most here. Closer “Sorrow Evoker” is the standout, alternating between a slow, spacious riff and an unexpected piano melody with the most emotive vocals I’ve yet heard in a Witchcraft song (their singer exists somewhere in the spectrum between Ozzy and Danzig) before building to a climax with one of their trademark grooves and as potent a guitar solo as I’ve ever heard.

The Sword’s contribution to this split is fairly redundant; if you’ve heard any of their songs, you’ve pretty much heard them all. “Sea of Spears” is the chunky, low-fi Sabbath-worship you expect from this band, moany vocals and downtuned guitars in full flair. There’s a neat little speck of harmonized lead near the track’s end, but unlike the surprisingly Pantera-like breakdowns in the song’s core, they appear only briefly. The song isn’t long enough to get boring, but it’s much too tedious to be remembered. Their other track is their take on Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song” and it adds proof to an old theory I developed back when I heard Demons & Wizards’ version, that this song is un-coverable. It’s mind-boggling really, considering that the song consists of one riff (in two variations) and a few sustained chords, but I’ve never heard a metal band make it work, The Sword included. Their version is rigid where the original just grooves and the vocals are absolutely painful, more so than on any of The Sword’s album tracks.
