here was actually too large to be included in a single issue of any journal. Because the project (a complete analysis of a complex marine ecosystem) covered a number of disciplines and could serve as a model for a wide variety

of studies in the now extremely relevant ecological sciences, it was decided that a hard-covered book, available to all, would be appropriate. The primary objective of this study was t o design and carry out an ecosystems

survey of a small area in such detail that it would be possible to delineate precise sea bottom community boundaries and to determine the environmental conditions which influence them. I t is with some pride that I can state that the objectives were reached with greater success than anticipated. In a sense, the success of this project gave me hope that it could be used as a model for future community studies in the sea and on the land. In order to emphasize this study as a model, similar studies, both local and worldwide, were reviewed and compared with the present one. What is more important, it was possible to show that previous subjective studies of a similar nature were still substantially correct when compared with the present more objective approach t o the problem and its results.
