More The Stranger Wore A Gun (1953) Directed by André De Toth Genre: Western Randolph Scott plays Jeff Travis, a former spy for Quantrill's Raiders. When he heads to Arizona to start life anew, Travis finds that his reputation has preceded him: crooked Jules Mourret (George Macready) hires him to monitor a series of gold shipments, in preparation for a major robbery. Eventually, Travis falls in love with Shelby Conroy (Joan Weldon), daughter of freight-line operator Jason Conroy (Pierre Watkin), and decides to turn honest. Stranger Wore a Gun was directed by Andre DeToth - it was the third of his six films with Randolph Scott. Scott plays a typically complex De Toth hero who becomes confused as to what's left and wrong, and begins playing several ends against the middle. The plot is a little convoluted, but Scott is an engaging hero, even when he's playing a bastard. The lovely Claire Trevor co-stars as Scott's true love and his moral compass. Lee Marvin and Ernest Borgnine play a pair of cackling villains, an act they would play again two years later in the great Bad Day at Black Rock (1955).
