Volume III covers the Masting, Rigging and Sail-making of the French 74. As previously the subject is dealt with exhaustively, masts for example being followed from the first conversation to the finished article, with all its fittings – literally – from heel to truck. All dimensions are given in full, but the fascinating of this section is contained in the difference one can perceive between French and British practice in the finishing and fitting of top-hamper. Naturally all pieces are drawn out in full, and the quality of the line work for clarity and “precision leaves even the immortal Longridge in the shade” (this is an original quotation made once by Robert Gardiner!).

For rigging, not only does the description start with ropemaking (including a delightful sketch of eight Lilliputian Frenchman working at a rope machine) but covers all the ancillary aspects such as blocks, deadeyes, all types of belaying points, anchors and their tackle, davits, the rigging of boats and careening gear.
