It’s Shakespeare meets Laugh-In in this ambitious nudie cutie spoof. I never studied the Bard in school, but I’m pretty sure old Willie never referred to Romeo as a "weakling, piddling fag." Therefore, I would be hesitant to recommend this film as suitable preparation for a local amateur theater production. However, I would recommend it to all hot-blooded fans of vintage skin cinema.

The Secret Sex Lives of Romeo and Juliet takes place at the Globe Theatre in Old London (although the audience looks more like a bunch of drunken, late sixties American frat boys, complete with hippie haircuts) where Shakespeare’s play is being "performed to match the spirit of the lusty and ribald time it portrayed." In other words, the naked flesh flies thick and fast as the title characters profess their love (and lust) for not just each other, but for anyone else who happens to be handy. Using Franco Zeffirelli’s popular 1968 Romeo and Juliet as its springboard, The Secret Sex Lives injects rapid cut, Laugh-In style gags into its extended sex scenes. The most amusing gags are the ones which ape specific moments from Rowan & Martin’s pop satire series such as "Here come de Prince" and "Sock it to me!" (which is screamed by a woman during sex). There are also a number of other fun little creative touches sprinkled throughout the film, such as an amusing opening segment where the actors (most in various stages of sexplay) turn to the camera and reveal their names and the characters they play.

The female cast (most of them busty, lusty redheads) is uniformly attractive and, hell, there’s even some genuinely erotic moments such as when Juliet (DIEDRE NELSON, billed here as "Dicora Carse") performs mock fellatio on a banana. Russ Meyer fans will get a kick out of seeing VINCENE WALLACE (Vixen), and STUART LANCASTER (Supervixens) as a sadistic Lord Capulet. (He introduces himself on screen while plucking hairs out of a naked female bum. He also sounds like he had a bad cold during filming). You’ll also find director WILLIAM ROTSLER (Agony of Love) acting under his "Shannon Carse" nom de plume. Another moment of triumph from distributor HARRY NOVAK and director PETER PERRY ("A.P. Stootsberry"), The Secret Sex Lives of Romeo and Juliet stands proudly alongside The Notorious Daughter of Fanny Hill and The Erotic Adventures of Zorro as successful softcore send-ups of popular cultural tales.
