The Rip Chords were started by Ernie Bringas and Phil Stewart in 1957, in 1962 they landed a recording contract with Columbia Records and were assigned to record producer Terry Melcher. Calling themselves The Rip Chords, the duo released their first record in early 1963. "Three Window Coupe" was written by Roger Christian (who had been writing with Brian Wilson for the Beach Boys) and Jan Berry (of Jan and Dean) and the record cracked the Top 30 in the summer of 1964. It was followed with this album of the same name, which also featured Terry Melcher and Bruce Johnston on most of the tracks.

Terry Melcher would go on to produce some of classic rock's most memorable hits for The Byrds, Paul Revere and The Raiders and Steppenwolf. Bruce Johnston would join The Beach Boys in April of 1965 and continue to tour and record with them into the next millennium. It was also Bruce Johnston who would write Barry Manilow's theme song, "I Write The Songs" and the fantastic "Disney Girls" which the Beach Boys recorded.
