Dennis The Reign of Manuel II Palaeologus in Thessalonica, 1382-1387 (Orientalia Christiana Analecta 150) Much of the new information which Father Dennis has been able to present has been drawn from the letters of Cydones which he has used in the edition of Loenertz, though the second volume only in proof. Particularly interesting is the information which these letters yield on the relations between Manuel as emperor of Thessalonica and the papacy. We learn now for the first time that a papal legate was sent to Thessalonica and that there were negotiations with Manuel over the question of the union of the churches. But in concluding that an actual agreement was reached between Manuel and the papal legate, Father Dennis, I think, goes too far. Cydones, who is our only source on these negotiations, makes no such statement. He says simply that it was the general belief in Constan- tinople that an agreement was reached, but Cydones himself did not know whether this was true and so wrote to Manuel in order to find out. Manuel's reply, if indeed there was a reply, did not come down to us.
