It deals empirically with problems of citizen participation at a time when conventional political frameworks, such as those provided by the welfare states, are in crisis or decline. The contributors examine what goes on in cases of informal political action. They find that collective action needs to be analyzed by emphasising its context--in particular, relations between power and knowledge. Through this lens the study sheds new light on the development of collective action and political life in general.
