More Autor: William Harmor, "The Oxford Book of american Light Verse." Those o's look out from Oxford Book so owlishly and solemnly that any editor ought to recall the words of Daniel H. H. Ingalls, the distinguished Orientalist: "Sanskrit anthologies usually begin with a considerable number of benedictory verses, distributed in groups according to the god addressed, the personal god of the anthologist coming first." Although I do not in any way resemble the Abbot Vidyakara or even Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch, I can readily understand any anthologist's recognition of the need for benedictory preliminaries. The comforting sound of "the personal god of the anthologist" makes me wish I could, like Vidyakara, invoke the names of powerful bodhisattvas or, like Quiller-Couch, mention "the President, Fellows, and Scholars of Trinity College, Oxford."
