The Number Sense argues that there are two distinct kinds of mathematical objects: one arithmetic, which is elementary and mostly unlearned or easily learned before school, is deeply rooted in animal behaviour, and most probably relies on specific anatomical substrates in the brain, The other part consists in more advanced mathematical procedures that are specifically human, hard to learn, and seem to recruit networks of brain areas that were designed for a very differentpurpose.
