If you have followed the series to date, you may have already built a compact home foundry, a small lathe, and a metal shaper. These iterns of equipment will be a great aid in building the milling machine, and you have learned to master many technical problems, so the construction of this machine will not be so difficult. This is meant to be a progressive series, because it is not likely that you would assign yourself to some of these exercises merely to acquire skill and knowledge. With the vision of a valuable piece of shop equipment before you, you shouldhave all the motivation you need to spur you on. Like the lathe and the shaper, this machine is much larger than I first thought possible. It has features that are especially suited for the home shop, and a capacity that is greater than sma11 machines that are offered at popular home shop prices. It is extremely rigid, and early test operations have produced exceptionally fine work.

Like the lathe and the shaper, it performs some of the machine work on its own parts, but we rely heavily on the lathe for most of the machine work. The shaper can be very helpful in planing the flat surfaces and forming the box slides, but of course this work can still be done by hand if you have chosen not to build a shaper. If you have not yet begun building your shop, I hope you will start soon. This work really is within the ability of an amateur, and you will not be an amateur for long when you have acquired these simple skills. While I strive to offer enough information on each part of the machine, a certain amount of knowledge is assumed. It can be a great help to do some supplementary reading in other manuals on lathe operation, shaper operation, casting and pattern making, and general shop practice. Much of the discussion in the first chapter is as a result of problems that readers have told me about in their calls and letters. I very much like to have this feed back,-it helps me do a better job.

Building your own milling machine

I purchased this book out of curiosity as a machine tool designer/tool designer for 36 years. I am building a retirement shop to putz around in and this looked interesting. I ended up buying almost every book in the series and find there are chat rooms and websites where people have built these machines and are using them. I cannot say enough good things about this book. I have taken parts of the instructions and adapted them to making a mill of my own design. The book sparked ideas that are still keeping me sketching and cutting metal after a year. My 4 star rating is predicated on the fact you have to learn other skills or perform other tasks to build this particular machine. That takes time, but the ingenious way this series of books is written and laid out is a 6 star effort.
