More The Maxx is a comic book and animated series written and illustrated by Sam Kieth (with writing assistance from William Messner-Loebs earlier in the series and from Alan Moore in a later issue), and published by Image Comics. The first issue was published in March, 1993. The series follows the story of The Maxx, a homeless man who believes he is a superhero. The Maxx shifts between the real world and a dream world, which he refers to as The Outback, which is just as real to him as the real world. Julie Winters is a freelance social worker, who befriends The Maxx. Little does she know that she and The Maxx have a deeper connection, and it involves the dream world into which The Maxx is constantly drawn. Man - two paragraphs just don't do this title justice. When maverick artist the awesome Sam Keith left Neil Gaiman's Sandman to pursue his own path (In his own words, I felt like Jimi Hendrix playing with the Beatles), he came up with this title. A title thats the perfect union between clever, cult and cool - a wild crashing stream running through the shadowy backyard of the untapped unconsious. To give you a slight hint as to how cool this is - MTv choose the Maxx as its first partly animated (It actually just featured Keiths artwork with a rumbling narrative behind) adult feature and bootleg copies of the show are still in demand. Maxx is a real head tripp through the lush garden of the unconciousness. Sam Keith's art is magnificient. His landscape of the unbelivable is full of blatant gargutan beauty with the chracters leaping the electric in each panel. It's seldom that you'll see such art unhinged from reality. Keith broke many boundaries with this work of his. You just never know what lump of drugged imagination is going to leap out from the next panel. I actually used to have nightmares of the Izzes that featured in the story - Keith's demented blind cheery smurfs. The story line involves Maxx a street hobo who decides one day that he's a super hero and the voluptous social worker Julie - both alternately lost between the jungle of the grim metropolis they live in and the stark hunters ground of the shared unconcious they dream in - represented by the wild Australian outback populated by the incredible. As the story unfolds, among the bizzare excursions of mind and magic, Julie and Maxx confront the ugly truth as to just what they really are . Sam Keith did seem to run out of steam in the middle of the series though - after resolving the outback. Thats when he took assitance from comic legend Alan Moore. The crazy pace shifted down a gear as the storyline shifted to Julie's friend Sarah and the enigmatic super villain Mr.Gone. Down a gear but undeniably just as bizzare. I wanted to post this but uploading it was a bitch. Try it out. I dont know why it came out formated like that - sorry. To the impatient - I just said this is a good clever title and download it. Wow, great introduction w0lfgang,thanks, sorry for my simple introduction :P But doubtlessly, one of the greatest comics. Bye Sure - spreading the art deserves merit. Hope you rake in the points :) Thanx very much barbiturico. looking forward to the read. "
