The Greencards are indeed a fascinating band. A bit of a musical melting pot - two Australians and an Englishman - they take what’s arguably an outsider’s approach to American folk music, in the process virtually re-inventing the genre in quirky yet compelling ways.

With three previous outings to their credit, The Greencards combine breezy confidence with an undiminished sense of adventure, toying with time-honored forms with invigorating aplomb. Fascination, their first for the prestigious Sugar Hill label, is an aptly-named exploration of folk-based acoustic music, endlessly inventive and musically restless yet consistently engaging.

Front and centre is singer/bassist Carol Young’s voice, somehow both warm and welcoming yet possessed of a cool detachment that lends an enchanting, occasionally ethereal air to the material. But the band is clearly a collective, with equal contributions from violist/violinist Eamon McLoughlin and master-of-most-things-stringed Kym Warner. Arrangements are both delicate and intricate, and together the trio, working for the first time with producer Jay Joyce, have carefully crafted and finely polished each of the twelve tunes on offer while retaining the ambient warmth of primarily acoustic instrumentation.

Bluegrass is an obvious starting point, but the band’s canvas is broad, with elements of traditional folk and hints of world music woven seamlessly into the tapestry. And rather than simple tunes supporting written words, compositions here tend to sound fully integrated, the music and the lyrics seemingly part of a single, considered whole.

It’s brainy music, to be sure. Melodies come in snatches, rhythms are often jagged, and tempos vary from the whispered and wistful (“Three Four Time” and “Into The Blue”) to foot-stomping rave-ups (“The Avenue” and “River Town”). It’s not sing-along stuff, yet there’s nothing coy or overly intellectual about proceedings. The ‘Cards are simply bursting with musical ideas, and do an exceptionally fine job of coaxing those ideas into fully-realized songs.
