In The Enemy Below Robert Mitchum and Curt Jurgens are respectively captains of a U.S. destroyer and a German U-boat whose vessels come into conflict in the South Atlantic. Both are good men with a job to do, the script noting Jurgens' distaste for Hitler and the Nazis and engaging our sympathy with the German sailors almost as much as the Americans. Made at the height of the cold war of the 1950s, the film delivers a liberal message of co-operation wrapped inside some spectacular action scenes and a story which builds to a tense and exciting, moving finale.

Während des Zweiten Weltkriegs 1943 im Südatlantik. US-Zerstörer-Kapitän Murrell ortet ein deutsches U-Boot und beginnt einen Angriff, der sich zum erbitterten Privatduell entwickelt. Der deutsche Kapitän von Stolberg schenkt dem Gegner nichts und steigt gewieft mit Tauchmanövern und gefährlichen Torpedo-Attacken in das Katz-und-Maus-Spiel ein. Am Ende drohen beide Boote zu sinken, die Mannschaften helfen sich, die Deutschen werden vom Zerstörer aufgenommen. Murrell salutiert in Ehren vor dem Verlierer von Stolberg.

Duello a distanza, durante la guerra 1939-45, tra incrociatore americano e sommergibile tedesco. Affondano entrambi, ma i due comandanti fanno a gara in cavalleria per salvare i superstiti e salvarsi a vicenda. Tecnicamente ineccepibile e con qualche puntiglio documentaristico, il film di Powell, attore passato alla regia, è piatto come un mare in bonaccia. Manca di invenzioni e di personaggi. Non dice niente, ma lo dice bene. Da un romanzo del Comandante D.A. Rayner. Oscar per gli effetti speciali a Walter Rossi.

Au début de la Seconde Guerre Mondiale, Murrell (Robert Mitchum), alors capitaine d’un cargo commercial, est torpillé par un sous-marin allemand et perd son épouse dans le naufrage. Recueilli après avoir passé vingt-cinq jours sur un radeau, il accepte le commandement d’un destroyer car il préfère, dit-il, « être du bon côté du canon ». Son passé de « civil » inspire une certaine méfiance à ses hommes, mais l’occasion se présente bientôt pour lui de prouver ses capacités. L'asdic (ancêtre du sonar)détecte en effet la présence d’un sous-marin allemand. Celui-ci, commandé par Von Stolberg (Curd Jürgens), a également repéré son ennemi mais, fort habilement, Murrell se maintient toujours à la même distance afin que le signal émis par son navire passe pour un faux écho.

Durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, un destructor estadounidense, al mando de un comandante novato que no tiene la total confianza de la tripulación, encuentra un submarino alemán al que persigue por todo el Atlántico.Ambos capitanes intentan anticiparse a los movimientos del otro, convirtiendo la persecución en una partida de ajedrez en la que cualquier error puede provocar la derrota y la muerte.

Tras varias escaramuzas, el sumarino consigue torpedear al destructor, dejándolo en muy mal estado.
