The album AMG REVIEW: The last Beatles album to be recorded (although Let It Be was the last to be released), Abbey Road was a fitting swan song for the group, echoing some of the faux-conceptual forms of Sgt. Pepper, but featuring stronger compositions and more rock-oriented ensemble work. The group were still pushing forward in all facets of their art, whether devising some of the greatest harmonies to be heard on any rock record (especially on "Because"), constructing a medley of songs/vignettes that covered much of side two, adding subtle touches of Moog synthesizer, or crafting furious guitar-heavy rock ("The End," "I Want You (She's So Heavy)," "Come Together"). George Harrison also blossomed into a major songwriter, contributing the buoyant "Here Comes the Sun" and the supremely melodic ballad "Something," the latter of which became the first Harrison-penned Beatles hit. Whether Abbey Road is the Beatles' best work is debatable, but it's certainly the most immaculately produced (with the possible exception of Sgt. Pepper) and most tightly constructed. — Richie Unterberger Let It Be was the last Beatle album released but Abbey Road was the last one recorded. After the Get Back/Let It Be sessions, the band was breaking up and each Beatle was thinking of a solo career. Paul asked George Martin to produce a new album with the condition that the recording be done like "in the old days". Detail : The Beatles twelfth official album release, but the LAST that was actually recorded by them. This was the first L.P. to be in Stereo ONLY. The advance sales for this release in the U.K. totalled 190,000, taking it straight to number 1. After just six weeks it had sold 4,000,000, and by the end of the year, 5,000,000 worldwide. It took another 10 years to double that figure, when by 1980 it topped 10 million. It would have been number 1 for 18 weeks consecutively, but for the 1 week that the Rolling Stones album, "Let It Bleed" took over the top slot. The album was of course, named after the London road in St. John's Wood that houses the E.M.I. studios (although, at one time it was going to be titled, "Everest"). And because of the eventual success of the album, the studios were re-named as "Abbey Road Studios". The cover photograph was taken Friday 8th August 1969 by Iain Macmillan at 10 o'clock in the morning. For these quick snaps a British Bobby held up the traffic for 10 minutes as six pictures were taken (in two of which Paul wore his sandals !). Along with Sgt. Peppers, once again The Beatles managed to create something so unique that it has been imitated many times. The "Abbey Road" album came without a title on the front cover, and no lyric sheet ... being quite simple, it just had one photograph on the front, and one on the rear. The album title refers to EMI Studios on Abbey Road where the Beatles recorded most of their songs. Another title for the album was Everest, a brand of cigarettes Geoff Emerick, their engineer, smoked. In fact, a trip to photograph the album cover in the Himalayas was suggested but was dismissed due to time constraints. For the actual cover, the Beatles were photographed crossing Abbey Road in front of Abbey Road studios wearing what they came to work in. Paul, barefoot, wore sandals to work. In America "Abbey Road" won a Grammy for "Best Engineered Non-Classical Recording". Also recorded during the Abbey Road sessions, "Come And Get It" - 24th July 1969 in 1 take. The album was also part of "The Beatles Collection" 13 album box set (see Beatles Collection). In January 1979 a picture disc version of Abbey Road was planned, but very few copies were released before the project was abandoned, and the release withdrawn. On 19th October 1987 this album had it's first release on C.D. which was published in stereo, with a catalogue number of CDP 746 446 2 CREDITS: George Harrison - Guitar, Vocals John Lennon - Guitar, Guitar (Rhythm), Vocals Paul McCartney - Bass, Guitar, Piano, Guitar (Bass), Vocals Billy Preston - Organ Ringo Starr - Drums, Vocals Mike Vickers - Moog Synthesizer George Martin - Producer Ian MacMillan - Photography UK: Apple PCS 7088 (stereo) Released: September 26, 1969 Highest chart position: 1 (November 1, 1969) US: Apple SO 383 (stereo) Released: October 1, 1969 Highest chart position: 1 RIAA Gold Album award: October 27, 1969 The Beatles Abbey Road Label Apple Catalogue No. PCS 7088 Release date 26th September 1969 Total time 47:07 LP Parlophone PCS 7088 26/09/69 CD Parlophone CDP 7 46446 2 19/10/87 U.K. Album Chart Detail : Entry Date : 4th October 1969 Highest Position : 1 ... for 11 weeks from 4th October 1969 + 6 weeks from 27th December 1969 Weeks in Chart : 81 + 2 from 31st October 1987 (CD release, reached no.30) + 9 from 8th March 1997 (reached no. 42) === 92 in total Track List (LP): Side 1 1.
