More The Armies of Spain and Portugal 1808-1814 By Mike Gilbert, George F. Nafziger Upon the death cf Carloc III of Spain, in 1788, the Spanish Army consisted of twenty eight Spanish infantry regiments, twelve foreign infantry regiments, three light infantry regiments, twelve line cavalry regiments, eight dragoon regiments, and two cazadore (light cavalry) regiments. The Spanish army was organized, drilled, and fought in the manner established by Frederick the Great of Prussia. The Spanish, like the rest of Europe, had imitated the greatest warrior of the 18th Century. In 1788 the Spanish army consisted of:
