A Manchester based AOR band that carried many predictions for a major career. Although TEN scored almost instantaneous success in Japan they found it much tougher going in Europe and the USA. The band’s first crop of album’s boasted an enviable array of individual talents, especially with vocalist Gary Hughes and guitarist Vinny Burns, and reaped huge acclaim from the AOR press but TEN struggled to break free of the independent circuit. Indeed, in their homeland TEN unfortunately found it difficult to even break any bigger than a seemingly permanent fixture as headliners of their label organised club events ‘The Gods’.

TEN was formed in 1995 by the much-lauded vocalist GARY HUGHES, following two previous solo albums, and ex-DARE, ASIA and ULTRAVOX guitarist VINNY BURNS. Later added erstwhile SIMPLY RED and ASIA guitarist Aziz Ibrihim and the former DARE rhythm section of bassist Shelley and drummer Greg Morgan.

The debut album was crafted by the late and esteemed figure of JOURNEY producer Mike Stone. It was released in May 1996 selling 20'000 copies in Japan where the group immediately gained a rabid following. This set the wheels in motion for the recording of a second album, 'In The Name Of The Rose', that was released later the same year and began work on a third album in 1997. In the interim, TEN worked with ex-VALENTINE and OPEN SKYZ vocalist HUGO assisting in the recording of the American's debut solo album, produced by Hughes.

Having appeared at the 1996 event, in November 1997 TEN once again headlined Now And Then's 'Gods' show, on a bill that differed very little from the previous year's festivities. This time, however, the group was celebrating the release of a brand new album, 'The Robe'

A year ending trek to Japan resulted in the group's Japanese label, Zero Corporation, releasing a double live package in early 1998. Giving their by now predictable slot at 'The Gods' festival a miss for a change Burns nonetheless turned up on stage adding guitar to MAGNUM frontman BOB CATLEY's live set.

TEN's status increased in Japan the band signed to major label Mercury Records for their 1999 release 'Spellbound'. For this effort TEN pulled in producer Rafe McKenna. Keyboards came courtesy of former TYGERS OF PAN TANG and WAYSTED man Ged Ryland.

Although TEN's star was still ascending not everything proved easy. The album recording took far longer than expected and recording was initially delayed when a promised drum kit failed to arrive in time!

Ryland quit later the same year to form 'supergroup' ARABIA with ex-VON GROOVE vocalist Michael Shotton, CATHEDRAL drummer Brian Dixon and another former TEN man bassist Steve McKenna. Ryland would also be located in a one off live version of CONTAGIOUS and as part of American guitarist DANNY DANZI's backing band. Meantime, 2000 found Burns issuing his debut solo album 'The Journey' with Hughes, naturally contributing alongside former YA YA and ULTRAVOX vocalist Sam Blue.

TEN would return to the studio for their 'Far Beyond The World' album. Recorded in Hannover, Germany and mixed by ex-VICTORY guitarist Tommy Newton the record would see the inclusion of former HARD RAIN keyboard player Paul Hodson into the ranks. However, just as the band was gearing up to promote the record guitarist VINNY BURNS announced his departure. During January of 2002 TEN announced Burns replacement as being Chris Francis, a graduate of the Guitar Institute of Technology. Hodson would temporarily join the ranks of PULSE for their 2002 appearance at 'The Gods' festival.

McKenna and Morgan would join ex-TYKETTO and WAYSTED singer Danny Vaughn's touring band VAUGHN in late 2003. The following year McKenna sessioned on US outfit MILLENIUM's 'Jericho' opus. That same year Paul Hodson launched his own act, aptly titled HODSON. Taking on the lead vocal role Hodson allied himself with PULSE and BOB CATLEY band guitarist Vince O'Regan, bassist Josie Vespa and PULSE's Lynch Radinsky on the drums for a 2004 debut 'This Strange World', released by the Italian Frontiers label.

TEN returned in June of 2004 with the album 'Return To Evermore', released through the band's own Intensity label. 2005 saw the announcement that a double disc retrospective release was planned, complete with totally re-recorded guitar parts, and a new TEN studio album for early 2006. Greg Morgan exited in September 2005 for VOODOO CIRCUS, being replaced by former MARSHALL LAW and PARADISE LOST drummer Lee Morris.

TEN celebrated their tenth anniversary with the double disc collection 'The Essential Collection 1995 - 2005' through Frontiers Records, comprising newly recorded versions of older material divided into 'Essential Rockers' and 'Essential Ballads'. The group parted ways with bassist Steve McKenna in December. A new studio album would be set for recording in early 2006, 'The Twilight Chronicles' emerging in August through Frontiers. Recording line-up comprised GARY HUGHES, guitarists Chris Francis and John Halliwell, keyboard player Paul Hodson with DRAG AND DROP session drummer Frank Basile.

1er CD de Ten. Le CD commence avec "The Crusades/It's all about love". C'est une longue intro tout en musique très "classique-électrique". C'est puissant, mélodique, bien rythmée. Un beau jeu de guitare/batterie.

La partie chantée ne commence qu'à 2mn 40 passée. Une bonne voix de la part de Gary, de beaux chorus, un bon rythme de basse. Un bon refrain facile à retenir, le tempo vous fait battre la mesure.

"After the love has gone" ; je connaissais déjà ce titre mais uniquement sous sa version live grâce au cd "Never say goodbye". Ce que je peux en dire c'est que j'apprécie autant la version live que la version studio. C'est péchu, dynamique, bien rythmé, la voix de Gary est toujours irréprochable. Une super mélodie accompagnée de chorus sublimes, c'est facile à retenir. J'adore cette chanson! Ca vous trotte dans la tête : génial!

"Yesterdays lies in flame" : pareil pour cette chanson, je la connaissais sous version live, maintenant je la découvre version studio. J'adore ce son électro-accoustique, le rythme, la voix, la mélodie : c'est sublime. Un bon refrain tout en chorus qui vous trotte dans la tête : c'est facile à retenir, c'est agréable. Gary a une voix tellement chaude et prenante, c'est sublime. J'adore!!

"The Torch" : là aussi, je connaissais la version live et maintenant je découvre la version studio. Pareil : aussi doués en live qu'en studio! Le rythme est génial, la voix aussi. J'adore le rythme batterie/guitare, les chorus sont au top! Une fois de plus c'est facile à retenir et en plus cela me fait penser à Dare par moment en tout cas, j'adore!

"Stay with me" : une fois de plus, je connaissais la version live et là je découvre la version studio. J'adore cette intro semi-accoustique, puis cela devient électrique : c'est génial! Tout en chorus et mélodie péchue. C'est facile à retenir et ça vous reste bien en tête. Un rythme dynamique qui vous fait battre la mesure. J'adore ce son électro-accoustique qui fait un peu "sonorité espagnole", puis piano-voix du plus bel effet. Le tout emmené à nouveau par de superbes chorus. C'est top!

"Close your eyes and dream" : là aussi je ne connaissais que la version live . Début tout en piano puis rapidement rejoint par une super partie de guitare. Gary chante sublimement bien une fois de plus, quelle voix!! Un refrain tout en chorus sublimes, c'est génial! C'est beau, c'est facile à retenir, ça vous trotte dans la tête. Tout est réuni dans ce morceau : beaucoup d'émotion en resort : c'est sublime!

"Eyes of a child" : démarre tout en chorus "a capella" : c'est sympa, puis les instruments rentrent dans la partie. Je trouve le rythme plutôt surprenant, mais c'est particullièrement agréable et sympathique. Un rythme mid-tempo accompagné d'une super mélodie. En tout cas, il se découle une ambiance positive de cette chanson. Rythme très "space" sur la fin on dirait que l'on part "ailleurs".

"Can't slow down" démarre avec un rythme péchu et en "nanana" très sympa de la part deGary lol. C'est dynamique et cela vous fait battre la mesure. Un refrain tout en chorus facile à retenir. Là aussi , il se dégage une ambiance positive et sympathique de ce morceau. C4est top!

"Lamb to the slaughter" est un morceau rapide et péchu, bien rythmé comme d'habitude. La mélodie et l'ambiance sont un peu moins fun et "légère" que les deux précédentes. Mais c'est un morceau super sympa tout en chorus. Un refrain hyper facile à mémoriser.

"Soliloquy/The loneliest place in the world" démarre tout en guitare "influence espagnole". Puis le synthé presque avec un son de clavecin je dirais prend le relai avant d'être rejoint par tout les autres instruments et la voix de Gary : l'ensemble est superbe! Le rythme est calme et mélancolique, la mélodie permet à la voix de Gary de s'envoler dans des vocalises sublimes. C'est puissant, c'est empli d'émotion : c'est magnifique.

Pour résumer, un album tout en mélodie sublime, dynamique, péchue. Des rythmes un peu plus sombres et mélancoliques mais c'est superbe. Un bon présage qu'était ce premier album de Ten. Celles et ceux qui ont eu la chance de les découvrir directement avec ce premier album savaient déjà qu'ils tenaient là un grand groupe de hard mélodique. Mentions spéciales à Gary Hughes le chanteur : merveilleuses vocalises, c'est sublime. Bravo!
