One of the many qualities of the composer Georg Philipp Telemann, who had to endure almost two hundred years of undervaluation, until historiography decided to assign him the rank of an absolute great of the musical late baroque, doubtless consisted in his markedly idiomatic treatment of the instruments to which he lent his voice.

From Leipzig, where he began his study of jurisprudence, oratory, and philosophy at the age of twenty (but then went on to devote himself much more intensively to musical pursuits, such as his leading of the Collegium Musicum there), Telemann soon set out on frequent travels taking him quite often to George Frideric Handel in Halle, to concert and opera performances in Berlin, and to the performances of the Hanover and Braunschweig-Wolfenbuttel court ensembles, with these performances making a particularly strong impression;

"I thus was enlightened in the French taste by the former and in the Italian and theatrical taste by the latter, and with both I became acquainted with the diverse natures of various instruments, which I did not fail to chose myself with the greatest possible diligence. How necessary and useful it is to be able to distinguish these kinds in their essential species is something I have continued to experience to the present day, and I say that nobody, without knowing such, can be quick and happy in invention. It is also the exact acquaintanceship with such instruments that is indispensable for composition. For one otherwise will have to pronounce this judgment:

The violin is bowed with an organ's flair,

The flute and oboe blare a trumpet's fanfare;

The gamba saunters along like the bass in its gait,

Only that here and there a trill or two lies in wait;

No, no, it isn't enough that the notes resonate,

That you sell bushelfuls of rules at the market rate;

Give each and every instrument what it can endure,

And then the player has his joy and you your pleasure."
