The musicians in question are Gerry Conway (drums and percussion), Simon Nicol (guitars), Dave Pegg (bass), PJ Wright (slide and electric guitars, pedal steel) and the singer is Steve Gibbons. As The Dylan Project, they present an exhilarating tribute to the work of arguably the greatest postwar songwriter in the English language – Bob Dylan.

Steve Gibbons on Bob Dylan: "It is no exaggeration to say that the first time I heard Bob Dylan, it changed my life. In those days, I was working with my band, The Uglys, and we were booked for a month at a little club called The Kon-Tiki in Munster (Germany). It was a hard slog; we lived at the back of the club in a one-room billet, and played six nights a week, four hours a night twixt 9pm and 2am, at which time a young American named Peter took over and played records. His excellent taste was all the persuasion we needed to linger longer and drink away most of our wages until the wee small hours of morning - I think he played that one, too...Anyway, at one such session, he called me over and said 'You ever heard of this guy? I got it in the post from the States'. The guy was Bob Dylan, the album was 'The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan': track one, side one, the voice made me tingle, the song made me shiver, the moment is frozen...".

The Dylan Project is not a 'tribute band' in the usual sense of the term. With more than forty years of fronting bands, Steve Gibbons has long since developed a captivating stage presence and is a master storyteller with a unique style and delivery. He has paid tribute to Bob Dylan throughout his long career and sees The Dylan Project as an extension of his love for Bob's music.

Review by Brett Hartenbach Going back to the release of his first couple of albums, artists have been mining the catalog of Bob Dylan for material with varied results. It's been rocked up, toned down, commercialized, dramatized, treated venerably, literally and playfully. With The Dylan Project, British rocker Steve Gibbons tackles 14 Dylan tunes (along with one new original which pays homage) ranging in date from 1962's "When the Ship Comes In" (released January 1964 on The Times They Are A-Changin') to "Ring Them Bells" from Oh Mercy (1989). Unlike many who have attempted a similar endeavor, Gibbons, whose vocal delivery has always owed a debt to Dylan, is smart enough to know that a great song doesn't necessarily guarantee a great record. Along with a tight band which includes members of Fairport Convention, he doesn't bring anything particularly new to these well-worn classics, but does succeed at mixing a strong personal take with a genuine respect for the material. Gibbons' unpretentious pub-rock also fits well with the choices here, which tend to lean toward midtempo and country-tinged folk-rock. More than half of the selections for The Dylan Project are culled from Dylan's remarkable output between 1965 and 1967, although tracks such as New Morning's country love waltz "Winterlude," the lighthearted "Peggy Day" (Nashville Skyline) and a terrific rendition of Empire Burlesque's "Dark Eyes" keep it from predictability. The Dylan Project isn't meant to make anyone forget Blonde on Blonde, but it is a satisfying listen, as well as a fine tribute to the rock era's greatest songwriter, by a talented student of his work.

If anybody's got Dylan Project 2 and/or Dylan Project Live at Cropredy Festival 1999, I hope they will do the left thing, and make an old Dylan fan very happy.
