& 34;Som en ond dr?m& 34; handler om de fire barndomskammerater Jonesy, Beaver, Pete og Henry. De m?des hvert ?r til en uges jagt i november, hvor alle problemerne bliver glemt og historierne fra gamle dage genopfrisket. Som en slags femte mand i gruppen er Duddits, en retarderet dreng, som de hjalp tilbage i barndommen. Men efterh?nden som de fire voksede op og flyttede fra byen, har de lidt efter lidt mistet kontakten med Duddits, og da bogen starter, har de ikke set ham i flere ?r. Historien begynder p? jagtturen i skoven, hvor en mand pludseligt dukker op foran Jonesy, der er lige ved at tage ham for et r?dyr; f?rst i sidste ?jeblik ser han, at det er en j?ger. Jonesy tager manden med tilbage til hytten, da det g?r op for ham, at han er syg. Det viser sig dog, at det ikke er en almindelig sygdom, j?geren har. Han er blevet inficeret af et rumv?sen. Et rumskib er styrtet ned i skoven, og der er flere overlevende rumv?sner. Milit?ret ved besked og fors?ger at afsp?rre omr?det.
