More The first complete English translation of this important text, using the Tibetan version with reference to the Chinese, and offering some insight into the origins of tantra in India. Together with the commentary by Buddhaguhya. This work is of seminal importance for the history of Buddhist tantra. The central theme of the tantra is quite simple - what is perfect enlightenment and how does one achieve it? Throughout the text, perfect enlightenment is personified as Maha Vairocana Buddha. The nature of perfect enlightenment is defined thus: "It is to know your mind as it really is. That is the supreme, full and perfect enlightenment." The Mahavairocana is classified as a Yoga tantra which deals mainly with skilfull means and insight, or prajna, but it also teaches practices which accord with the Kriya tantras. Though the tantric path is singled out as being the most effective, it is noteworthy that the Mahavairocana adopts an extremely conciliatory attitude to all religious beliefs. The shortcomings of some are criticized, yet as Buddhaguhya says, "through relying upon the self of ordinary foolish people and upon the gods, people seek liberation and even the bliss they seek as liberation should be viewed as a cause linking them with the Bhagavad Vairocana." This is because the tantra considers all spiritual teachers who lead us towards reality to be manifestations and embodiments of the great compassion of Mahavairocana himself.
