This is probably the most accessible fusion I have heard. Stanley Clarke is a brilliant mix of powerful, rock-orientated tracks that also have a great smooth and funky feel. Playing with fellow fusion stars Jan Hammer, Tony Williams, and Bill Connors, Stanley Clarke's compositions are geared to the strengths of his band-mates. He gives almost all the solo duties to Hammer and Connors, while he is content to play fills and rhythm w/Williams. Clarke has a highlight acoustic track "Spanish Phases for Strings & Bass" and gives an effective vocal performance on the short "Yesterday Princess".

The star of this album is Bill Connors, however. He has by now fully developed as a guitarist after a very impressive debut performance with Return to Forever in 1973. Connors plays with an incredible full-bodied tone that he modeled after Eric Clapton's tone on "Spoonful" from Fresh Cream. His phrasing is very similar to that of a trumpet or saxophonist and his (admitted) heavy influence by John Coltrane is quite obvious. Connors laces "Vulcan Princess" and "Lopsy Lu" with his highly original style during he and Hammer's energetic exchanges, but it's "Power" and the finale of "Life Suite" that Connors stretches out. His solos soar with fast, off-beat runs and over-bends that sound not unlike another Coltrane disciple, John McLaughlin. This is truly an album that every guitarist should own. It is unfortunate that this is Bill Connors' last fusion effort in the '70's as he became disillusioned about the direction of fusion moving toward can-you-top-this guitar acrobatics and away from the musicality of jazz. ~ Review by smzig99 @ Buy It at Lowest Price on Amazon
