Lyrics & Music Stan Getz & Joao Gilberto - Getz/Gilberto #2 (1993)

More Stan Getz & Joao Gilberto - Getz/Gilberto 2 (1964) Genre: Jazz A follow up to the original ground-breaking (and trend-setting) Stan Getz - Joao Gilberto collaboration, this legendary Carnagie Hall concert presents both the Getz quartet, featuring Gary Burton, and Gilberto's trio. Contains two previously unissued tracks amongst the bonus material. Allmusic.com: Justifiably overshadowed by the peerless Getz/Gilberto album (which featured "Girl From Ipanema") from a year before, Getz/Gilberto 2 still holds its own with an appealing selection of fine jazz and bossa nova cuts. Unlike the first album's seamless collaboration by Getz, Joao Gilberto, Astrud Gilberto, and Antonio Carlos Jobim, here Getz and Joao Gilberto turn in separate sets recorded live at Carnegie Hall in October of 1964. Backed by a stellar quartet comprised of vibraphonist Gary Burton, bassist Gene Cherico, and drummer Joe Hunt, Getz turns in a sparkling performances on the seldom covered ballad "Tonight I'll Shall Sleep With a Smile On My Face," while stretching out nicely on his original blues swinger "Stan's Blues." With the support of bassist Keeter Betts and drummer Helcio Milito, Gilberto displays his subtle vocal and guitar talents on a set of bossa nova favorites, including his own "Bim Bom" and Jobim's "Meditation." The CD reissue also includes a couple of additional live vocal cuts featuring Astrud Gilberto, including somewhat lifeless versions of "Corcovado" and "Girl From Ipanema" from the Carnegie Hall concert, and inspired readings of "It Might As Well Be Spring" and "Only Trust Your Heart" from the club recording Getz Au Go Go. An appealing title amongst Getz's many bossa nova outings, but not an essential one. Newcomers should definitely start with the Getz/Gilberto album before checking this one out. Dustygroove.com: A very different record than the first collaboration between Stan Getz & Joao Gilberto -- but that's also one of the things that makes it great! The album's more of a split LP than a shared one -- as side one features a live performance from the great mid 60s Stan Getz quartet that featured Gary Burton on vibes -- a wonderfully cool combo that was very under-documented on record, and which makes a key appearance here. The combination of Burton's vibes and Stan's tenor is pure genius -- a sound that's got all the subtle hues and cool colors of the Getz bossa recordings, but which is quite different overall. Stan's tone is amazing on these tunes. Side two features Joao Gilberto without Stan -- playing in a very groovy trio that's more straight bossa than most of his other US recordings -- cool small combo grooving that's totally great! The lineup features Gilberto on guitar and vocals, Keeter Betts on bass, and Helcio Milito on drums -- all working in a sweetly grooving mode. Personnel: Tracks 1- 4: Stan Getz (tenor sax); Gary Burton (vibes); Gene Cherico (bass); Joe Hunt (drums). Tracks 5 -10: Joao Gilberto (guitar); Keter Betts (bass); Helcio Melito (drums). Tracks 11-15: Stan Getz (tenor sax); Joao Gilberto (guitar, vocals); Gary Burton (vibes); Gene Cherico (bass); Joe Hunt (drums); Astrud Gilberto (vocals). Recorded live at Carnegie Hall, New York, New York on October 9, 1964. Includes liner notes by James T. Maher and Mary Cleere Haran. Tracks: 1. Grandfather's Waltz (Lasse Farnlof-Gene Lees) - 4:59 2.
