On the surrender of Paulus the Red Army immediately searched for all Politische Kommissar (Political Commissaries) and shot them on the spot. The German High Command had issued an similar order that

the commissary of the Red Army are to be shot on the spot. Paulus, lacking real fighting experience before Stalingrad, should of coz made an outbreak before the Soviets encircled the 6th army. But he did the only left thing considering the circumstances and surrended. This is a very interesting book poorly scanned, though.
