The genius of Tesla lay not only in the discovering and generating the AC current but in the designing the associated components that would make the transportation and utilisation of electricity practical. The transformer is such one device and it has not changed its form in any substantial way anyway. See, the crux of success of the AC Current over DC current lay in the ability to be able to transport electric power without significant loss over great distances and hence when Tesla introduced the AC current his transformer was a special object that was capable of transforming the 'power' for such transportation and at the receiving end down-transforming it with negligible loss as compared to the DC current. Incidentally the transormer was also a kind of device that enabled Tesla to transport electrical power using only a single wire, at low frequencies. He used no wires when he transported his power using air.
