Karl Leister, c’est le clarinettiste ! Il fut premier soliste de la Philharmonie de Berlin avec Karajan dès 1959, à l’âge de 21 ans. Depuis, il poursuit une brillantissime carrière internationale avec les plus chefs et solistes les plus renommés, inutile de vous égrener ici le Gotha… Leister nous offre ici un plateau de sonates de compositeurs dont le plus célèbre est Jan Vanhal, c’est dire que les autres sont vraiment inconnus ! Tous les quatre vécurent approximativement dans la seconde moitié du 18e siècle ; Bochsa est tchèque parisien, Vanhal tchèque viennois, Dupuy franco-suisse danois, Eberl autrichien autrichien. De ce dernier, la Symphonie fut créée en 1805 en même temps que la Troisième de Beethoven. Les critiques estimèrent que Eberl remportait la comparaison haut la main : à vous de décider en écoutant sa Sonate pour clarinette et piano. Toujours est-il que ces quatre sonates, d’essence classique, préfigurent toutes le langage romantique que développera Beethoven dans leur sillage. This lovely recording by clarinetist Karl Leister features an enchanting mix of early Romantic lieder for clarinet and soprano, plus transcriptions of early Romantic lieder for clarinet sans soprano. Some of the music is very well known: "Adelaide" was one of Beethoven's most popular works in his lifetime andSchubert's "Ave Maria" remains one of the best-loved pieces of music ever written. Others are largely unknown: Johann Wenzel Kalliwoda's "Heimathlied" and Conradin Kreutzer's "Das Mühlrad" are likely familiar only to the hardest of hardcore lieder experts. But in every case, the nostalgic charm of the works and the charming lyricism of the performances make the program thoroughly successful. Leister was solo clarinet with the Berlin Philharmonic for 30 years under Karajan and his tone here is as meltingly beautiful as his technique is effortless. Soprano Letizia Scherrer has a warm, rich voice that blends and contrasts nicely with Leister. Pianist Ferenc Bognár provides a lightly modulated and deftly dexterous accompaniment that never draws attention to itself. As a sort of bonus track, Leister concludes the program with Carl Maria von Weber's ultra-rare "Duetto Se il mio ben, cor mio tu sei?" with two mezzo-sopranos, two horns, and a string quartet joining Leister and Scherrer for a four-minute invitation to romance.
