Spike Jones - Let's Sing a Song for Christmas (1956)

Entertainment Weekly

It's choral-style holiday schmaltz long on the treacle.

Verve's Let's Sing a Song of Christmas is an excellent collection of Spike Jones' Christmas recordings, featuring no less than 20 tracks, including "All I Want for Christmas (Is My Two Front Teeth)," "Jingle Bells Medley," "Nuttin' for Christmas," "The Angel in the Christmas Play," "Frosty the Snowman," "Christmas Alphabet Medley" and "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve?." There have been other collections of Jones' holiday tunes, but this one is arguably the best, given its generous selection. – Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

& 8220;One of the goofiest Christmas albums you'll ever hear! Spike cut this one with his City Slickers in the mid 50s -- and it's kind of got the feel of a TV show gone crazy. Many of the songs start out in a sweet mode -- often with vocals by a female singer or kids -- but then a lot of them go very crazy, almost in a way that makes you think they're just doing the songs poorly, until you realize that Spike's winking at you from the sidelines, letting you know that the messed-up set of tunes is part of his own Grinchy masterplan to dismantle Christmas. We've treasured this one for years on vinyl -- and we're stunned but pleased to see it on CD! Titles include "The Night Before Christmas", "All I Want For Christmas (Is My Two Front Teeth)", "Deck The Halls Medley", "Christmas Alphabet Medley", "Here Comes Santa Claus", and "My Birthday Comes On Christmas Day".

At first you may be shocked that this isn't the loony Spike Jones you know and love. But then the craziness peeps in; after some straight, wholesome numbers, there's ''Jingle Bells'' sung in pig latin. First and foremost, it's a 50's period piece for those into retro Americana; George Rock's goofy little-boy voice in ''All I Want for Christmas (Is My Two Front Teeth)'' wouldn't crack up most children whose sense of humor has been sharpened by the speed gags of ''The Simpsons.'' But what shines through is the work that went into this album, the laborious arrangements of unfamiliar songs. (Ever heard ''Wouldn't It Be Fun to Be Santa Claus's Son?'' Neither had I.)

Most of the album is devoted to the Jud Conlon chorus, in serious renditions of favorite Christmas songs. The Conlon performances and arrangements are beautiful and memorable; some of these arrangements were used almost verbatim by The Carpenters years later. Two excellent vocal groups make guest appearances. Vocalist George Rock does his little-kid imitation several times, and there are some cuts by a children's chorus (billed as The City Slicker Juniors).

The only orchestra leader in history who successfully conducted with a baton in one hand and a pistol in the other!
