This superbly illustrated volume draws together over one hundred rare images to reveal the American cavalry as they appeared throughout Americaâs turbulent campaigns in the West. These vivid images show the men, their uniforms and equipment as they actually appeared whether fighting Indians across the Mississippi or pursuing bandits along the Mexican border. Each image is supported by a detailed and informative caption that reveals much on the finer points of dress, weapons or equipment.

After the American Civil War the American army was drastically reduced in size. By 1866 only ten regiments of cavalry were available for active duty, as the mainstay of the nationâs military, to the west of the Mississippi River. Here they rode on numerous patrols, skirmished with diverse enemies or spent their time as garrisons of frontier posts. This is the full story of these dashing troopers who have long since become a military history legend.
