Sonny Stitt - Just The Way It Was: Live at the Left Bank (1971) Genre: Jazz

Amazon.com:

Saxophonist Sonny Stitt could play rapid-fire lines left out of the Charlie Parker songbook or roll out the funk-soul grooves that drove people vigorously to the dance floor. Just the Way It Was is of the dance-floor variety, featuring Stitt, organist Don Patterson, and drummer Billy James tearing it up at a 1971 live performance recorded by Baltimore's Left Bank Jazz Society. Stitt used his electric saxophone for this gig; though he did it regularly during this era, it was a controversial move in the jazz community, which didn't want its bop icons "wrecking" the tone of the sax with such gadgetry. Electric or not, Stitt rips notes from his horn like kernels from a corncob as Patterson and James keep things at a boil. This is certainly not Stitt in definitive form, but it offers an interesting and insightful look at a gifted band taking flight once again, and that certainly makes this worth checking out.

Allmusic.com:

The second of two premier releases from Label M and the archives of The Left Bank Jazz Society of Baltimore, MD (along with My Foolish Heart from Stan Getz). One of Sonny Stitt's many performances for The Left Bank was recorded in March 1971 and is the source of this set. Stitt's electric saxophone, of course, is the main attraction. And while the treatment of the instrument scuttles some of its tone, with Stitt at the mouthpiece (he was the first to record the instrument, back in 1966), the electric tenor sax is more than just a novelty. The traditional "John Brown's Body" proves to be the set's highlight.

Allaboutjazz:

Sonny Stitt— Just the Way it Was, Live at the Left Bank (Label M 5703). A wonderful period piece as train wreck. The culture of the 1970s violently collides with Sonny Stitt's Be Bop heart. Stitt plays an electrified saxophone in a classic organ trio. Where the Getz disc was cool and relaxed, this recording is frenetically incandescent. Stitt's playing is precise and Bop-centered. When blown through the electric saxophone, songs like "Cry Me a River" and the "Shadow of Your Smile" sound like Tin Pan Alley from a '70s mystery film.
