The present volume on solid state physics gives a detailed and comprehensive treatment of a number of current research areas that have developed extensively since the original volumes in this series devoted to solid state physics were published in 1959 (Volume 6 , Parts A and B). The current volume is intended to supplement and expand many of the subjects covered in the original volumes and demonstrates the tremendous growth and sophistication that have developed in the experimental techniques of solid state physics. The original volumes contain excellent introductions to many of the basic experimental techniques used in solid state physics and it is the purpose of the present volume to provide a more specialized treatment of some of the topics of great current interest. The volume contains complete descriptions of the experimental methods as well as discussions of what physical quantities can be measured and how they relate to the basic problems of solid state physics. The volume has been written in the hope of providing a useful source book and guide for researchers who wish to do experimental work in the various fields covered. It should appeal to graduate students as well as to more senior researchers who wish to start research in areas outside their specialty. The volume emphasizes the experimental background and technique of the subjects covered, but it also provides an overall view of the physical principles involved and should provide stimulating reading for anyone who wishes to become more familiar with advanced solid state subjects. The volume covers a variety of subjects representing modern solid state physics and should give the reader a fairly comprehensive view, but due to the great scope of current research in solid state no attempt has been made to cover all subjects.
