Bowlby examines the surprising roles of the consumer subject in these works--from the female victim of advertising deliberately fraught with psychological undercurrents to motivate buying, or the rational, male agent demanding his rights to goods and services. Bowlby also examines the joint influence of psychology and consumer culture, showing how ideas about consumption affect questions of choice in areas which are seemingly far removed from shopping. This examination of assumptions about the psychology of consumerism also sheds new light on questions of human subjectivity. checked
