Portugal, 1809: After saving the life of Sir Arthur Wellesley (soon to become the Duke of Wellington) at the Battle of Talavera, Sergeant Richard Sharpe receives a field commission as lieutenant. Sharpe's first mission is to go behind enemy lines to Casa Antiga to find a missing agent, James Rothschild, who carries a banker's draft for money for the British army. Sharpe is then given command of a platoon of the 95th Rifles under Captain Murray, but he finds them undisciplined louts. Neither Murray nor the Riflemen respect Sharpe, as they do not look on him as a real officer. Captain Murray is killed after a surprise French attack and Sharpe is left in sole command. The Chosen Men of the 95th try to mutiny, but the fight is stopped by the arrival of two Spanish allies, Major Blas Vivar and Comandante Teresa. They offer to lead Sharpe to Casa Antiga since they are heading to Torrecastro. Sharpe reluctantly agrees and on the way he tries to win over the Chosen Men.At Casa Antiga, there is no sign of Rothschild and Sharpe becomes increasingly suspicious of his Spanish companions, despite his growing attraction for Teresa. He then finds his real mission is to transport a holy relic to Torrecastro to inspire an uprising against the French.
