Sex Differences in the Brain (Progress in Brain Research) by De Vries

Although the notion that brain function is in certain respects sexually differentiated has been accepted for several decades, it was only in the seventies that Raisman and Field demonstrated that brain structure can be sexually dimorphic as well. Since then the number of discoveries of sexually dimorphic structures has risen considerably. The sexually dimorphic nature of the brain appears to be very stimulating for neurobiological research.

It led to the exploration of steroid-brain interactions which lead to sexual dimorphism, and further to the study of the developmental processes involved in sexual differentiation of the brain and it offers a unique opportunity to investigate whether functional differences are associated with structural dimorphism. The 13th International Summer School of Brain Research, held in Amsterdam in August 1983 was entirely devoted to the theme of sex differences in the brain and covered the afore-mentioned features.
